PRESS RELEASE - March 15, 2010
Halifax – Easy Move Canada (EMC), which has been recruiting since 2006 foreign-educated nurses as Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Personal Care Workers for many nursing homes, as well as highly trained Line Cooks for known restaurants in Nova Scotia, is now branching out to form EMC Caregivers supplying live-in caregivers to Nova Scotian families.
“We feel there is a huge need for live-in caregivers in Nova Scotia.” said Michael Yu, president of EMC. “With our ageing population, many seniors want to continue to live in their own homes but need assistance with everyday tasks and personal care. Families who have loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s or other disabling conditions can also benefit from the service. Having a live-in caregiver is a far more cost effective and less traumatic alternative to moving into an assisted living or care facility.”
“Live-in caregivers are also in high demand from families with several children, especially those with special needs child. They allow the family the guarantee of a safe and convenient alternative to daycare, permitting both parents to pursue their careers with no domestic upheavals when overtime, shift work, or out of town meetings demand care beyond the regular eight to five routine.”
EMC specializes in recruiting foreign workers primarily from the Philippines. With office in Nova Scotia and representative offices in the Philippines, United States and Saudi Arabia, EMC can do onsite assessment of a family’s care needs, values, and expectations and seek out suitable candidates through their representative offices to match their needs and criteria.
All of EMC’s nurse recruits have 4 year baccalaureate nursing degrees and substantial work experience in the Philippines as well as other countries like Saudi Arabia. As English is the medium of instruction in Philippine schools, communication concern is not a problem between the caregiver and their Canadian employers. All live-in caregivers have to pass skill and educational requirements as well as rigorous health and security checks that are part of the Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s requirements under the Foreign Worker program.
In addition to personal care and childcare, live-in caregivers will also do light housekeeping, shopping, cooking, laundry, and even pet care. Their hours can be flexible to meet the needs of the family. For seniors living alone, they provide the needed joyful companionship and assurance to distant family members that all their loved one’s needs are being managed.
Live-in caregivers earn $9.10 or more per hour for a forty hour week, minus a $65/per week deductible for their room and board. Their work visas are usually for two years and can be renewed if both parties agree.
Although families can do their own recruitment of a foreign worker, EMC Caregivers offers the assurance of a proper needs assessment, the rigid screening and matching of qualified candidates, and management of all the paperwork required by Service Canada and CIC. EMC Caregivers also coaches and prepares candidates in advance for life in Canada and provide mediation for both the family and the caregiver in Canada should problems arise. EMC’s process of foreign worker recruitment normally takes four to six months.
“EMC Healthcare Staffing has been helping nursing homes and restaurants in Nova Scotia for nearly four years to fill their staffing shortages of qualified workers.” Yu said, “We are excited about the prospect of now working with families through EMC Caregivers to help them access reliable care for their children, seniors, or persons with disabilities in their own homes.”
